Qantas !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this week that they would be mothballing their entire fleet of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! s until mid-2023 at least, as the airline industry continues to be hit hard by the Coronapocalypse. The airline expects to carry whatever international travel they do have on their smaller A330s and Boeing 787s.

Airbus began studies to develop a wide-body airliner to challenge the Boeing 747 in 1988, and the A3XX, later the A380, was rolled out in 2005. Unlike the 747s ‘hump’, the A380 features a full upper deck, with a capacity of up to 853 passengers. The aircraft has, depending on the configuration, a range of up to 8,000 nmi and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85.

Emirates Airlines, the largest user of the type, canceled an order for 39 A380s last year, and have begun their retirement of the aircraft, though it was expected to remain in service with the airline until 2035. Air France also retired its fleet of 10 A380s earlier this year as a result of the downturn in flying as a result of the Coronavirus .

oh my! I’ve never done the Aus-US or US-Aus flight on anything other than 747s or A380s. It’ll be interesting (should my planned Aus trip next year actually happen) to take it on something so small.

Well, also that is assuming I fly Qantas.

Man, the A380 program sure has seen its star fall. At this point they should take the engines off, clip the wings and use the hulls for condos.

First 380 I ever saw in the wild, VH-OQJ arriving at DFW from SYD back in 2015.

Airbus owes a rebate to all those airports (and the taxpayers who support them) for all the billions of dollars of infrastructure waste in “prepping the airports for A380".

787 is actually a nice ride.  You won’t notice the missing A380 in the line up.

Can confirm that the 787 is a nice ride.

Unless you’re in BA coach. Hardest seat I ever felt

Hardest seat I’ve ever felt?

United 737MAX Coach, Emergency Exit Row. For some reasons, despite the larger leg room? They used church pews in the Exit Rows.  Miserable.

the A380 is just so big! you feel special getting on board even if youre ticket is for bottom rung back of the plane steerage

Yeah, I can’t argue. But, it was weird sitting in BA Steerage last time— in the middle of what looked like a complete airliner seating section— to think about a WHOLE ‘NUTHER SEATING SECTION above me... that I had zero visibility to.

I feel like they are using those slabs in more than exit rows.  And they are shorter, not supporting as much of your thighs.

If they’re not using it, can I borrow it for something?

Yes! Thanks for pointing that out. The major place they “cheat” with these new seats isn’t actually in the seatback thickness... It’s in the pitch and the tinier hard-church-pew bench width you actually sit on.

I’m of certain dimensions where I wish I had more thigh support. Ugh.  not on new planes.  Between THAT and those tiny little lavs in a MAX?  Both great reasons to leave that POS to rot in the desert.

In that top shot, there is now way that plane is clearing that other plane. Very expensive low speed shunt incoming!

I’ve flown the 787 from DUB-EWR, and it’s really nice. I was in UA Economy ‘Plus’ but other than a few more millimetres of legroom, I think the seats are the same.  777 into Europe wasn’t bad either.  I’d become rather used to the 757 into Shannon, which gets old (no pun intended) but really because of the single aisle.

I’m assuming that they were backing it into a spot when that photo was taken.

Just as an aside on “the financial carnage left by the A380", this PDF research report is hilarious as an example of Economics Gone Astray...

It’s possible that LAX spent over a billion “getting ready” for the A380... there were a lot of changes in the new TBIT Expansion to accommodate it.

What that should tell you is that QANTAS doesn’t expect to be flying the LAX-SYD anytime soon. A family member arrived in Oz from the US last week via Air NZ which involved a stop over in Auckland...he should be out of quarantine this weekend.

As for normal travel into and out of Oz... I’d go with QANTAS’ expectation - mid 2023.

If you still have Oz citizenship/residency then you’ll get in but expect two weeks quarantine but if you want to get out again...make sure that is all sorted before you turn up. And hopefully you can afford premium business class fares or higher too since all economy seating is dead.
